Shepard’s Catalog of Teratogenic Agents

A comprehensive reference that includes information on over 3,000 drugs, chemicals, infections, and other exposures, describing what is known about their potential to cause birth defects in humans or animals. It is an essential resource for researchers, clinicians, and policy-makers working in reproductive health and teratology. First published in print by Dr. Thomas H. Shepard in 1973, the Catalog has long been a trusted source in the field.

about our Founder

Dr. Thomas H. Shepard (1923-2016)

Dr. Thomas H. Shepard was a pioneering figure in teratology, embryonic and fetal pathology, and pediatrics. He left an enduring legacy in the field. Deeply respected by colleagues and warmly regarded by the many students and fellows he taught, mentored, and inspired, Dr. Shepard’s remarkable contributions continue to shape the practice and study of teratology. He is profoundly missed.

One of Dr. Shepard’s most significant contributions is the Catalog of Teratogenic Agents, a foundational reference in teratology. Originally authored by Dr. Shepard and later co-authored with Dr. Ronald J. Lemire (2004–2007) and Dr. Janine E. Polifka (2009–2021), the Catalog was first published in 1973 by Johns Hopkins University Press and distributed globally until 2010. Today, an electronic version remains in international circulation through various publishers and is also distributed by PEAR-Net Society as a stand-alone resource in conjunction with the TERIS database.

The Catalog compiles data on the teratogenic effects of drugs, chemicals, and infectious agents, based on findings from human, animal, and in vitro studies. It includes information on over 3,700 agents, referencing global literature including Japanese, German, and Russian sources. While focused primarily on teratology, the Catalog occasionally includes data on fertility and paternal exposures, as well as information on more than 250 developmental genes associated with congenital anomalies and syndromes. It continues to serve as an essential tool for healthcare professionals, researchers, and teratologists seeking evidence-based insights into developmental risk.

Shepard’s Catalog is currently co-authored by:

Sura Alwan, MSc, PhD

Clinical Instructor, Department of Medical Genetics, University of British Columbia

Dr. Alwan is a clinical teratologist and birth defects epidemiologist whose research is grounded in the belief that scientific evidence should inform—not alarm—pregnant individuals and the professionals who support them. She specializes in chronic conditions during pregnancy and the potential effects of associated medications on fetal development.

Thomas M. Burbacher, PhD

Professor Emeritus, Department of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences, University of Washington

Dr. Thomas Burbacher is a developmental toxicologist whose research focuses on how prenatal exposure to neuroactive substances affects brain development and function.

Kimberly S. Grant, PhD

Senior Research Scientist, Department of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences, University of Washington

Dr. Grant is a developmental neurotoxicologist whose research focuses on the impact of prenatal chemical exposures on child development, particularly in the domains of early learning, attention, and memory.
